The “kaypoh” me went to find out the background story of Mookata House again this time round. Hence, it is story telling time once more! How did Mookata House come about? The idea of opening Mookata House was inspired from Christopher (the boss)’s mother-in-law cooking. With an experience in the Thai F&B industry, she whipped up lots of awesome traditional Thai dishes which they really enjoyed it. The idea behind Mookata House is simply home-cooked dishes that comes with a tinge of “hometown” flavour, complemented by unforgettable homemade gravy and sauces, and best enjoyed with a cold beer on hand. Though profits may be the goal of many businesses out there, I still believe the stories behind each cafe or restaurant is the fire that keeps them going!

But why did they choose to open it at East Coast Park when they can open it at a more accessible place with a better customer flow? The reason is that Big Splash is a pretty unique spot as it is somewhere near town but at the same time, it is near a beach. East Coast Park offers give that you that feeling as though you’re away from all the hustle and bustle but you’re actually just right outside the city. Even though the area might not be really spacious, the space at Big Splash still provided an opportunity to cater for both air-conditioned and outdoor zones. The layout provides good ventilation, making the restaurant 50% less smoky than most other BBQ joints out there. We totally enjoyed the whole BBQ process without worrying that we will have have that BBQ smell! The place would have a perfect Thai atmosphere if they played Thai music in the background since they already have local-thai service staffs! For more interior photos, click here! Well, it is finally time to introduce the food that are available at Mookata House!

At S$45.90, you will get to enjoy this value set which feeds 2-3 people. This may look just the same from other Thai BBQ restaurants but what you get is totally different. In this platter, you will get a quality selection of kurobuta pork collar, kurobuta pork belly, wagyu beef, boneless chicken, prawn, scallop, seafood stick, cut squid and a mixed vegetables platter which includes kang kong, enoki mushrooms, sweet corn, cabbage, carrots and vermicelli. The quality of the meat used at Mookata House really amazed me. They use only premium meat and they only use chicken thigh for their boneless chicken unlike previous places which mixed different parts of the chicken in the platter. I must say for the quality you are paying, it is worth every cent paid and it will fill your tummy for sure! Definitely a good combination to go with beer and you will be happy to know that 5 bottles of Asahi Beer is selling only at S$35! Something not to be missed! What else did we have on that day itself? Of course, we got to start off with their Traditional Tom Yum Seafood Soup to open up our appetite. Tom Yum soup is characterized by its distinct hot and sour flavors, with fragrant spices and herbs generously used in the broth. The basic broth of traditional tom yum soup is made of stock and fresh ingredients such as lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, galangal, lime juice, fish sauce, and crushed chili peppers. Their version is rather spicy and tangy which will please your taste buds if you love it spicy. They are very generous with the seafood so it will be worth that S$9 that you are paying for it. This definitely prepared us for more dishes at the back!

How can we miss out rice and noodles in our meals as Asian right? Their Thai Fried Rice (seafood) is something that you should not miss out when you are there. I will definitely prefer this over their Pineapple Fried Rice any other time. This dish differs from Chinese fried rice is that it is prepared with Thai Jasmine rice instead of regular long-grain rice. This dish varies from places to places but I thought this is pretty good as it really brought me back to Bangkok with it. However, eating this stir-fried by the hawkers in Bangkok and having it by the streets will definitely be a better option! So if you are missing Bangkok, why not give this a try and see if it brings you back? For a closer look and the price, click here!

How can we not have Pad Thai when we are at a Thai Restaurant right? Of course we must have it even though they did not offer it us at first! However, this was pretty disappointing on first bite. The servings of seafood is generous, the taste is on point which is  a little spicy and a little sweet but the the texture of the rice noodles is chewy till it is too tough to chew. We actually had a pretty tough time biting it. We later found out from the boss that the chef was going for the al dente texture but it seems that they overdone it this time round. I am pretty the sure things will be improved the next time you guys visit them so do not be afraid to give it a try alright? For a closer look and the price, click here!

Last but not least, the upgraded version of Mango Sticky Rice! Do you know it is a “law” that you must have desserts after your meal? And so we did! The name says it for itself, it will delight your taste buds. Unlike the usual classic one, this is topped with coconut ice-cream and roasted peanuts which adds an extra crunch to the dessert. I thought this is rather special as compared to the usual mango sticky rice! We definitely enjoyed it especially when the mango tasted fresh and sweet. Want to find out the other dessert we have?
